Abstract Tóm tắt

This paper describes the structural geometry of cognition in a cognizing entity. It does not ask what cognition is or by what mechanism it operates — those questions are addressed in a companion paper. It asks, instead, what shape cognition takes once it is operating: what its limits are, how those limits are structured, and what consequences follow from the fact that the cognition of any one entity is always smaller than the reality within which the entity exists. The paper introduces the notions of resolution capacity, aperture, and pattern space as descriptions of the geometric features of any cognitive instrument, and argues that what is conventionally called chaos or randomness is in most cases not a property of the world but a description of the gap between a configuration's structure and the resolution of the instrument attempting to articulate it. The paper develops the consequence that no single cognitive instrument can complete itself, because some structural gaps in an aperture are not visible from within the aperture itself. It introduces the inter-subject dimension of cognition: there is no single cognition but many cognitions, one for each cognizing entity, and the comparison of these many cognitions is the procedure by which gaps invisible to a single entity become visible. The paper notes the relation between this account and the metaphor of map and territory, and clarifies why the metaphor must be used with care. Throughout, the paper makes no claim that the output of any cognition corresponds to reality as it is in itself; it claims only to describe the geometry within which cognition operates.
